I really enjoyed the Endless Referrals LIVE event held by BNI and the North Essex Chamber of Commerce on October 30th, 2008.
Bob Berg (pictured on the right with Samson Media president, Gene Sower) was the presenter and I have to say I really learned a lot in the few hours we spent together.
One of the topics Bob discussed was how to make an impression with people you meet at a networking event. One of the keys is to get them to talk about themselves. Remember, you want to listen twice as much as you talk (two ears, one mouth). And what better way then to get people to talk about themselves?!
KEY NETWORKING QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Now, while getting people to talk about themselves may sound simple and obvious, the real objective is to get the person you’re meeting for the first time to see you as a person of “value”. You want to engage them in a way that gets them to talk about themselves in a constructive way that, at the same time, positions you as someone of value in their networking life.
Here were three key conversation starters you should try at your next networking event after names and business cards have been exchanged:
- How did you get started in your business?
- What do you enjoy most about what you do?
- How can I know if someone I’m talking to would be a good prospect for you?
Thanks Bob! I can’t wait to try these out at my next networking event.
